How we test

One rubric, applied on real trips. No scores without a journey behind them.

Verified in-trip

A review is marked “Verified in-trip” only when an editor has used the product on an actual trip, and the review records when, where and in what conditions. Reviews that are planned or underway are labelled “In testing” and show their test plan instead of scores.

The rubric

  • Packability — how much space and weight it costs, and how well it compresses or nests.
  • Comfort — on the body, over a full travel day.
  • Durability — wear after real use: seams, zips, finishes, formulas.
  • Usability — how it works at a gate, in a hotel room, on a street.
  • Value — what it does relative to what it costs and what it replaces.

Each is scored out of 10. The overall score is the mean of the five. We also record carry-on fit: whether the product (or the bag it goes in) fits a standard cabin allowance.

Pass or fail

Every verified review ends with a clear recommendation. Our publishing system blocks a pass/fail verdict or any score on a review that hasn’t been verified.

Independence

Brands cannot buy a review, a score or a verdict. Sponsored placements, when they exist, are labelled with the partner’s name and kept separate from reviews.
